When you decide you want something for your life, it is important to be clear on what that looks like. You should write down in detail what you want your life to look like and then review it many times. Edit it if you need to, and make sure it really authentically captures what you want for yourself. Don’t be dismayed if your life currently seems to be very far away from your goals.
Once you are sure about what you want, it is time to take inventory of your choices. Are you making choices that are in line with what you want for your life? If the answer is no, great, we can work on that.
For each detail that you want for your life, write at least 1-3 actions you can take that will bring you closer to that goal. For example, if you want to become an author, you can write the action that you will begin writing. To make this exercise most effective, make it measurable – for example, “I will write every day for 30 minutes.” If you really want to go for it, add a deadline for your book to be finished.
We have been talking about relationships. Perhaps you have a big desire for more love and connection in your life. Please honor the desires of your heart and create a plan to make that happen. Here are some things you can include in your plans to grow in this area:
- Reach out to a loved one you haven’t spoken with in awhile
- Apologize to people you may have hurt
- Make plans to spend time with someone to show them they are special to you
- Give someone your undivided attention
- Write a letter to tell someone how much you care
- Give a gift to someone you love unexpectedly
- Be friendly and talk to strangers
- Talk to a therapist or professional coach about areas where you feel stuck when it comes to relationships
- Choose something you know you can do better in your relationship, and just do it with no expectation of anything in return
- Get involved with a group of people who share your interests and make new connections
- Be kind to yourself
